Abstract

This study aimed to describe the forms and functions of deixis in the film Kuali Hangus through a pragmatic analysis and examine its implications for Indonesian language learning in elementary schools. The study employed a descriptive method with a qualitative approach. The data consisted of utterances containing deixis in the film’s dialogues. Data were collected using listening and note-taking techniques, while data analysis followed the Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña model. Data validity was established through theoretical triangulation. The findings revealed 92 dialogue excerpts containing five types of deixis: person deixis, consisting of first-, second-, and third-person deixis, with 76 data; place deixis with 20 data; time deixis with 18 data; discourse deixis with 5 data; and social deixis with 8 data. The total number of deixis findings reached 127 because a single dialogue excerpt could contain more than one type of deixis. Person deixis was the most dominant type due to its frequent use in interactions among characters. The findings indicate that deixis in Kuali Hangus functions not only as a reference marker but also reflects the social and cultural relationships of the Sambas Malay community. The film can be utilized as Indonesian language learning media to teach deixis contextually while fostering appreciation of local language and culture.
