Abstract

Numerous teachers continue to face challenges in teaching listening, which remains a fundamental aspect of oral language proficiency. This study aims to examine the instructional techniques employed in teacher professional education programs for developing listening skills. The research is based on the premise that such programs are intended to improve the overall quality of teaching. Specifically, it investigates the range of methods used by English teachers to enhance the listening abilities of junior high school students. Adopting a qualitative approach with a case study design, data were collected through interviews and classroom observations involving five teachers enrolled in a professional education program. The study offers valuable insights into the instructional approaches utilized to support students’ oral communication development. Identified techniques include motivation, bonding, games, habit, and vocabulary repetition. The findings reveal that many teachers continue to depend on conventional methods such as vocabulary repetition while struggling to implement more interactive, student-centred strategies and frequently repeating the same techniques across different listening skill areas.
