Rachmad Iman Santoso

Abstract

Vocabulary mastery is a fundamental component of English language learning, yet many eighth-grade students at SMP Negeri 1 Balai struggle with limited vocabulary, which hinders their reading comprehension and communication skills. This study aims to improve students' English vocabulary mastery through the implementation of Daily Word Sharing activities. This research employed a Classroom Action Research (CAR) design consisting of two cycles, conducted from August to October 2024. The participants were 25 students from class 8A. Data were collected using vocabulary tests (pre-test and post-tests), observation sheets, and field notes. The results indicated a significant improvement in students' vocabulary scores. The mean score increased from 45 in the pre-test (initial condition) to 65 in Cycle 1, and finally to 85 in Cycle 2. The success criteria, defined as a mean score of ?75, were successfully achieved in the second cycle. Qualitative data from observations revealed that students became more active, engaged, and confident in using new words during the learning process. The study concludes that Daily Word Sharing is an effective strategy to enhance students' vocabulary acquisition by providing consistent exposure and active practice.
